Everyone at Hobby Car Corvettes would like to wish you a happy and prosperous new year! We hope that 2014 has been good to you so far. As for 2013, it was a record-breaking year for us. Not only did we break last year’s sales record, but we also smashed our record for cars bought on our annual trip to Virginia, shipping home nine cars- almost twice what we bought on that trip last year.
Our trip actually started out in North Carolina, where we picked up a yellow ’69 before picking up seven more cars in Virginia over the next couple days. The Vette that definitely had us the most excited was the 1969 Mako Shark coupe. It may be in primer and in need of a lot of love, but you just don’t see stuff like this every day, much less get there before it’s sold. In our case, we were getting ready to settle in for the night when the ad for a Mako Shark about 90 minutes from us popped up. We made the phone call and hit the road. The owner said his phone hadn’t stopped ringing since he posted the ad. We were thrilled that we had happened to see the ad and call before it was too late. I haven’t quite decided on my plans for this Mako yet, but for now I think it looks pretty wicked the way it sits! Finally, we snagged a green 1971 4 speed in Pennsylvania on our way home.
The sad part is that even though we came home with a lot more cars to our name, that amount was nothing compared to how many we looked at. Typically we walk away from one or two cars on this trip, but this time we went to see seven cars that we chose not to buy. This just goes to show that it is becoming harder and harder to find Corvettes out there that are worth buying. If you are buying from a private individual, be very careful to look the WHOLE car over, especially the frame and the birdcage. If you do not know what to look for on a corvette, then bring someone who does. And for goodness sakes, never agree to buy a car without a clean title in hand!
I have included some photos of the cars we got on our trip, as well as some pictures from our stops at Organ Cave in West Virginia and Bluestone Vineyard in Virginia. After all, this is not just a business trip for us, but a bit of a vacation too!
